Real change only happens when everyone is involved

In addition to technological advances, consumer education is crucial. Washing and cleaning in a greener and more sustainable way is a collective effort that depends on how the products are made and how they are used and disposed of.

Did you know that our parents strongly influence our attitudes towards cleanliness and tidiness? Our sister organisation, the German Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery and Detergent Association (IKW), recently conducted a study on this.

Encouragingly, when it comes to sustainability in the home, households prioritise the efficient use of detergents and cleaning products and the implementation of energy-saving programmes. These are the two aspects that receive the most attention in households.

As a result, the detergents and cleaning products sector is investing significant resources to encourage consumers to take this route. The industry has significantly improved the sus-tainability and safety of its products through a variety of programmes and information campaigns.

Saving water, energy, CO2 and money

Companies and associations across Europe are working hard to support this transition. The European detergent, maintenance and cleaning product industry's Sustainable Cleaning programme is just one of many initiatives designed to reduce the environmental impact of production and use.

Cleanright.eu, an initiative by A.I.S.E., the European umbrella organisation for the detergent and cleaning products industry, should also be mentioned. This platform is a reliable online source for good cleaning and household care. It provides comprehensive information about detergents, maintenance and cleaning products, along with practical, sound advice on how to use them safely and sustainably, and is brand neutral.

Avoid accidents – keep caps from kids

If capsules get into the hands of children, this could result in contact with the contents of the capsule, causing an accident. This is particularly dangerous for young children, who put almost everything in their mouths. For this reason, liquid detergent capsules must always be kept out of the reach of children, both before and after use.

The Europe-wide Keep Caps from Kids campaign is another initiative of A.I.S.E. (the International Association for Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products) on behalf of the detergent industry. The A.I.S.E. Keep Caps From Kids initiative is supported by the European Child Safety Alliance and more than 20 partners in Europe, including ministries, poison information centres and household safety associations.
